Acrylic Sheet

Acrylic is a very versatile thermoplastic with a very wide range of applications. It is commonly available as either extruded or cast sheet.

Extruded Acrylic is produced by extruding PMMA granules through a die to achieve the finished size and thickness, whilst cast is manufactured by polymerising liquid MMA syrup after pouring it between two plates of glass.

Key properties of acrylic include:

  • Excellent weather resistance
  • Superb Light transmission
  • Good surface finish
  • Reasonable impact resistance
  • Good resistance to dilute acids and alkalis.
  • Very easy to machine, fabricate, and form.
  • Can be highly polished

Both cast and extruded acrylic display many similar characteristics but there are some subtle differences between the two.

Typical differences include:

  • Chemical Resistance – Cast acrylic displays a greater resistance to some solvent.
  • Laser Cutting – Extruded acrylic has a tendency to burr on side of the component. The edges may appear slightly different depending on the direction of extrusion.
  • Laser Engraving – Extruded acrylic will appear matt grey after engraving, cast will appear matt white
  • Forming – Extruded material is easily thermoformed, cast is much more difficult to form or shape.
  • Thickness Tolerance – Extruded acrylic has a much closer thickness tolerance than cast. Typically a 3mm thick sheet could have a tolerance of +/- 15% for the cast product whilst extruded sheet would typically be +/- 5%. The high tolerance on cast products can lead to constructional errors if this is not taken into consideration at the design stage.
  • Polishing – Extruded acrylic is easier to flame polish than cast.
