As one of the most versatile thermoplastics on the market, the list of high impact polystyrene uses is endless. Here at Eagle Plastics, we are proud to be specialised high impact polystyrene sheet suppliers, and have the materials and equipment to be able to accommodate a wide variety of applications.
Advice and support from leading thermoplastic experts
When it comes to choosing the right thermoplastic, it is important to compare the properties that each material has with the requirements you have. We know that some of our customers may not know a lot about thermoplastics but we won’t let that get in the way of making sure you invest in a product that ticks all the right boxes. With over twenty years of experience under our belts, we have established a highly in-depth knowledge and understanding of thermoplastics – including high impact styrene – and can provide you with expert advice should you require it.
What is High Impact Polystyrene?
High Impact Polystyrene, commonly known as HIPS, is a rubber modified version of General Purpose Polystyrene. The addition of rubber makes the thermoplastic incredibly durable, with a much higher impact resistance than its former compound. Like all thermoplastics, the material can become soft and pliable when heated, and re-solidify upon cooling. These factors alone make HIPS a great material to manufacture components with.
Properties of High Impact Polystyrene
HIPS has many different properties that allow for a wide range of uses and applications for the thermoplastic. With more rubber content, the material can easily undergo manufacturing processes such as vacuum forming, and easily bends and moulds whilst retaining its durability. Its properties do not weaken once re-moulded either; making it very reliable. Due to its amorphous properties, HIPS can be painted – making it great for design purposes that require strong aesthetics.
High Impact Polystyrene uses
Due to the vast amount of properties the thermoplastic can offer, there are many different high impact polystyrene uses. Thanks to its strength and durability, the thermoplastic is ideal for marketing purposes and is often used for Point of Sale displays, handling trays, and promotional signage. It can also be used for thermoformed machine housing and parts, model making and plastic toys. In addition to this, the thermoplastic is commonly used to make bathroom cabinets and enclosures.

Are you looking for an ABS wholesalers? Here at Eagle Plastics, we are proud ABS suppliers and can offer thermoplastic solutions to meet a wide scope of requirements. When it comes to thermoplastics, you can trust that with over twenty years in the industry, we can help you. Our business has grown from strength to strength over the years and we take pride in being able to offer high quality goods, expert knowledge and extremely competitive prices.
How is ABS sheeting made?
ABS is a type of thermoplastic that has been made by polymerising styrene and acrylonitrile on to thermoplastic rubber. Once this has taken place, the formula is then melt compounded with the styrene acrylonitrile to create Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene – more commonly known as ABS. ABS is a highly versatile thermoplastic which means it is used in lots of different industries and applications. For ease of transportation and use, the thermoplastic is usually supplied in ABS sheet form.
ABS wholesalers – A flexible service
As a highly established and experienced ABS wholesalers we want to be able to provide sheets of ABS material that suit any requirement that our customers may have. We stock a wide range of pre-cut sheets that vary in their sizes, thicknesses, colours and textures so you’ll have plenty to choose from here at Eagle Plastics. In order to make sure we can cater to all, we also have a bespoke service on hand too. In our bespoke service, our ABS sheet suppliers will cut the thermoplastic into specific sizes and thicknesses made to your exact measurements and requirements.
What are the advantages of ABS?
Due to the polymerisation of two strong and reliable substances beforehand, once formulated ABS is an incredibly tough material. The thermoplastic boasts an impressive resistance to high temperatures – and its other existing properties are not jeopardised when exposed to these types of temperatures. In addition to temperature resistance, ABS has high impact resistance and can withstand contact with harsh chemicals. The material is retardant to flames too – and can be bought in a variety of different flame retardant grades depending on the environment it will be used in. Being a very durable material, ABS can be moulded, shaped and fabricated just as easily as High Impact Polystyrene, which means it too is a popular material for manufacturing purposes.
Using ABS for industrial and commercial uses
The extensive list of properties for ABS ensures that the thermoplastic is suitable for both industrial and commercial requirements. The strength and impact it upholds makes it appeal to the automotive industry, and you’ll find that many car bumpers will be made from ABS. Being waterproof, tough and resistant to certain chemicals and substances, ABS is also used to manufacture sports equipment such as water canoes and golf club heads. Building and construction sites benefit from the material’s toughness too and it is commonly used for making protective site helmets and headgear. Other applications include enclosures, automotive mouldings, transit trays and disability aides.
