Polyethylene is the most common plastic in the world, with more than 80 million tonnes produced annually. It has a number of uses, including plastic packaging and bags. In its high-density form, HDPE, it can be used for underground piping installations, rubbish bins and children’s toys. It’s also often used for garden play equipment, cladding and food preparation boards.
HDPE has a high tensile strength, which makes it ideal for a number of practical purposes. It has very good chemical resistance, which means it is not easily attacked by strong acids or bases and has virtually no water absorption. It’s also resistance to reducing agents and gentle oxidants. It has a very low friction coefficient and is very easy to fabricate and weld, which makes it ideal for quickly forming different types of plastic articles for a variety of applications.
It should come as no surprise, then, that such a versatile plastic should be so ubiquitous, with various forms of polyethylene consisting of the most common plastic produced worldwide.
