Transparent plastic, sometimes called acrylic glass, or to use its technical name Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) provides an economical alternative to polycarbonate when tensile strength, transparency, polishability and UV tolerance are more important than impact strength. It is suitable for use as an impact-resistant alternative to glass such as in picture frames, LCD screens, greenhouse windows and furniture.

It has a wide range of applications due to its excellent weather resistance, superb light transmission, resistance to dilute acids and alkalis and is easy to machine, fabricate and form.

It is typically used where it can take advantage of its natural transparency such as for windows, or see-through enclosures including exhibition screens.
