HIPS (High Impact Polystyrene) is an aromatic polymer that is made from the aromatic monomer Styrene, a liquid hydrocarbon that is commercially manufactured from petroleum. Polymerisation of the Styrene monomer produces general purpose polystyrene, (abbreviated GPPS), a stiff transparent thermoplastic polymer. Because of its limited impact resistance GPPS is impact modified with a rubber compound to produce High Impact Polystyrene. It is available in a wide range of colours and finishes and has uses in many industry sectors.
HIPS is a cost effective material that is exhibits great versatility and lends itself to many diverse applications. It is easy to thermoform, machine, and fabricate. It has a Vicat softening temperature of 88 degrees Centigrade and can be thermoformed between 110 – 190 degrees Centigrade depending on design and applications. Exhibiting good dimensional stability and low shrinkage HIPS is easy to line bend, route, or drill and can be easily cut using traditional saw or guillotine methods. Paint and printed finishes are easy to apply and bonding is very easy using traditional solvent or structural adhesives.
There are many applications for High Impact Polystyrene. Common uses include Point of Sale displays, Internal Signage, Sanitary products, Containers, Enclosures, Refrigerator linings, Packaging, Disposable or reusable moulds and Interior cladding. It has FDA approval so can also be used in food contact environments such as packaging, dispensers, display bowls and confectionery moulds.
